Historic Iran – US diplomacy soured by Israel.

The recent historic public meeting between an American Diplomat, Richard Holbrooke and the Iranian deputy foreign minister Mehdi Akhondzadeh was played down by the worlds press. It should be noted that this is the first official meeting at any government level for 28 years since the Iranian Hostage Crisis.

That diplomats are finally talking; which is, after all what they are supposed to do, is encouraging.
Iran’s main concern is the proliferation of drugs and the attendant social problems this brings. At least USA and Iran have a common talking point there. A new age of diplomacy is possibly being born.

This is the take from the World Security Network.

Meanwhile in an interview conducted shortly before he was sworn in yesterday as prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu threatened an attack on Iran within months. How this could be achieved without US approval covert or otherwise is uncertain. What this seems to indicate is that Mr Netanyahu’s leadership is likely to be more of a hinderance than a help to any peace process.
